About The Project

Implemented by Young Minds Africa Trust, the Model Parliament Africa programme empowers young women aged 18-27 to become active participants in civic leadership and governance. Successfully piloted in Botswana in 2022, the programme is now expanding to other Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries. By fostering a deep understanding of political processes, it aims to increase female representation in politics and contribute to achieving gender balance in parliament.

Participants undergo comprehensive training in political leadership, gaining firsthand experience through site visits to meet and learn from Members of Parliament. They observe parliamentary proceedings and then culminate their experience in a simulated Model Parliament where they debate pressing development issues, mirroring the real-world legislative process. This programme is designed to transform participants’ perspectives on political engagement, inspire them to become future leaders, and ultimately advance gender equality in politics.
