About The Project
Libraries Without Walls brings books, storytelling, and visual arts to children in underserved communities across Ghana.
Implemented by the Foundation for Educational Equity and Development (or FEED), the project goes where conventional libraries cannot. Its mobile hubs operate in schools, open community spaces, and communities with little or no access to books.
What happens after the book is read is just as important as the reading itself. Children encounter stories from cultures different from their own, discuss them with peers, parents and elders, and transform what they learn into murals and performances.
Local languages and culturally relevant stories keep the door open to everyone in the room, including the adults. Reading becomes a shared experience that encourages dialogue, creativity, and intercultural understanding.
FEED trains the teachers and facilitators to lead the hubs and sustain their activities. The project’s next phase will expand to five new communities, train sixty facilitators, and engage thousands more people.
