About The Project
Profonanpe began its work 32 years ago and since 2017, has been working in Datem del Marañon Province in Peru to increase the resilience of Indigenous communities in carbon-rich wetland ecosystems. Through this project, they seek to strengthen the technical capacities of Indigenous leaders on climate change and carbon markets, leveraging their rich cultural heritage and traditional knowledge. By doing so, it enables Indigenous leaders to address the challenges faced in their territories more effectively, while promoting self-management, governance, and the protection of their lands in a culturally inclusive manner.
To achieve these goals, the project first develops pedagogical content and a participatory methodology that is carefully adapted to the local cultural context. Secondly, they train young Indigenous leaders and tutors, such as Intercultural Bilingual teachers, ensuring that the training reflects Indigenous values and knowledge systems. This culturally grounded approach ensures that the technical aspects of climate change and carbon markets resonate with the communities. Subsequently, workshops are conducted to test, adapt, and improve the methodology with the aim of empowering leaders and tutors to replicate and share this knowledge within their communities, fostering a sustainable and inclusive approach to climate action.
