Youth Empowering Parents

Canada

The Youth Empowering Parents (YEP), a Reverse-Mentorship model, effectively connects newcomer adults with volunteer youth from similar cultural backgrounds with the goal of utilizing existing community resources to facilitate intercultural dialogue.

About The Project

Young individuals provide one-on-one tutoring to adults with the hope of closing a gap on negative stereotypes of immigrant families to reduce barriers of cultural integration through the provision of English and computer literacy courses. YEP aims to empower youth, as young as 11 years old, to become leaders within their own community, and to provide adults with private tutoring education at no cost.

During sessions not only adults learn the language and computer skills but the classroom enables greater intercultural learning, communication and understanding amongst the many diverse individuals in the community of Regent Park, Toronto – a neighborhood consisting of over 70 spoken languages among more than 7,000 residents.
