About The Project

VoiceMap puts accessibility mapping in the hands of the people most affected by exclusion.

In Kyrgyzstan, inaccessible public spaces restrict the participation of persons with disabilities. In Osh, the country’s second-largest city, no systematic records of these barriers exist. And what is not documented is easy to ignore.

Implemented by the OASIS Public Charitable Foundation, VoiceMap trains young people with disabilities as Digital Monitors. Using the OASIS mobile application, they identify obstacles across the city and turn each one into a geo-located data point.

A step too high, a door too narrow, a ramp too unstable. Once recorded, each one becomes evidence that municipal authorities can act on.

The Monitors then bring the data to local officials. They not only document their city, but help shape decisions that make it more accessible.

The Bishkek pilot trained thirty monitors and assessed more than fifty buildings. Osh is next: thirty new monitors, the app in Kyrgyz, and an accessibility index across both cities.
