About The Project

Amara (Universal Subtitles), a project of the Participatory Culture Foundation, is an innovative technology platform that combines the power of volunteers with the open web to make it possible for more people to benefit and have access to the growing volume of video content available today.

The Amara community is made up of online educators, filmmakers, volunteers, professional linguistics, partners and funders working towards building a more open and collaborative world. Universal Subtitles has already garnered 40,000 completed subtitles, over a half a million video views per month, and over one million unique visits to its website.
